Yep, Woody hit it right on the head. Way too many ABs for Ichiro to take a serious run at .400. Ichiro averages somewhere around 700 ABs a season, which means he'll need around 280 hits to hit .400.

That'd be EIGHTEEN more than he got last year when he broke the single season hits record. That's a pretty lofty goal.

I just don't think .400 is obtainable by a guy who walks under 50 times a year and racks up 700 official ABs a year. That doesn't mean Ichiro isn't a great player (why should he sit around walking if he can poke an RBI single into right field or a double into the gap?) but he's just not the kind of player who I think is real likely to break .400.

As for early starters, everyone please note that Willy Tavares is hitting .429 after the first week. Sixteen MLBers are at or over .400 still. It's still quite early and a nice little 50 game slump -- which aren't impossible (see: 2004 Derek Jeter) -- can pretty much ruin any attempts at .400 so ...
